Finally Japan Airlines (JAL) will shorten the wait time between FLY ON status qualification and service commencement. Right now, newly qualified members have to wait approximately 2 months before their benefits kick in. But from January 2014, eligible members can enjoy some of the benefits as soon as 1 week after the status qualification!

It is unclear whether the early benefits will kick in 1 week after your flight date or 1 week after your qualifying flight has been credited. But my guess is that JAL will run process this in a weekly batch, and therefore this most likely mean at most 1 week after your flight has been posted (could be on the same day if you are lucky). But we will find out more once this is rolled out in January 2014.

But the card issuing process will remain the same, meaning cards will continue to be issued at the end of the month following status qualification. So for benefits which require members to present their membership cards, including all airport services, will not start until you have received your membership card. However, you will be able to enjoy services such as reservation service and mile-up bonus earlier.

Members who qualified in December 2013 will be able to take advantage of these early benefits from mid-January 2014.
