Yesterday I reported that Japan Airlines (JAL) has painted one of its domestic Boeing 777-200 with special Disney livery to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Tokyo Disney Resort. Today JAL finally releases more details on this special livery dubbed "JAL Happiness Express" and held an event at Tokyo Haneda to officially unveil the plane.
It turns out JAL will paint 6 not 1 of its planes with this special livery. Two of these will be Boeing 777-200 and 4 will be Boeing 737-800. The first JAL Happiness Express plane, a Boeing 777-200 with registration JA8985, is ready and its commencement flight will be today's (March 29 2013) flight 525 from Tokyo Haneda (HND) to Sapporo New Chitose (CTS) which is scheduled to depart at 17:30 JST. This particular plane will be mainly flying between HND and CTS, Osaka Itami (ITM), and Fukuoka (FUK). So no mention of Okinawa Naha (OKA) which JAL also deploys its 777-200 on!?
Since there will be a 737-800 version of the Happiness Express, we will be able to see this special livery in cities throughout Japan :) Similar to other special liveries, you will be able to check whether your flight is operated by the special plane the day before departure on JAL website (Japanese only). The 6 JAL Happiness Express jets will be flying until March 2014. This makes sense since Tokyo Disney Resort is launching a full year of campaign to celebrate its anniversary.
Other than the Disney characters on the fuselage, JAL will also be using using JAL original Happiness Express headset covers, paper cups, and postcards. Passengers who boarded JAL Group flights twice between March 1 and May 6 2013 can also enter a giveaway which includes prizes such as tickets for 2 on JAL Happiness Express charter flight.
JAL has been official airline of Tokyo Disney Resort since it opened 30 years ago and will continue to expand its tie with the theme park to commemorate the anniversary. For more details on JAL Happiness Express, you can refer to the press release (Japanese only)
Japanese aviation news site Aviation Wire was at today's event. You can see Mickey was there as well as the de facto face of JAL, Shimizu san, was there for the press and lucky kids who were invited to the event. You can see the special JAL original headrest cover and paper cups from Aviation Wire's report. You can once again see Shimizu san in the new JAL cabin attendant uniform too which will be rolled out from April 1 2013.
