JAL supports Food Nippon Action once again with domestically produced rice flour strawberry roll cake. Image by Japan Airlines |
Another new product from Japan Airlines (JAL) to support the Food Nippon Action, a movement to improve Japan's food self sufficient rate. Once again, JAL is cooperating with Mon Chou Chou, an Osaka based pastry store, to produce a domestically produced rice flour strawberry roll cake.
The strawberries used are a special breed grown in Iwade. They spent 5 years to develop this hybrid breed. These strawberries are 1.2 times the size of the regular ones and is able to maintain the same sweetness. No wonder the cabin attendants are so happy in the picture :P
This limited time roll cake is available at Haneda and Itami Blue Sky stores between April 1-30 2010. And they are only 1,680 yen (tax included) each! With my JALFC 10% discount, it's only 1,512 yen, which is ~USD16.
So what's the deal with rice flour? According to JAL, there are three main selling points:
1. It contains more starch than wheat flour and therefore produce a spongy, moist, sticky texture.
2. It contains a good balance of amino acids and you don't have to worry about wheat allergy
3. It's almost 100% domestically produced! Unlike wheat flour which is 86% imported in Japan.
